In A Manikin World
Somewhere
In a world neither here nor there
We ride the bus or train somewhere
And pass, indifferent, ships in the night
Only we pass in day, in the sunlight
And after the overture, there’s no more
No opera, no light under the door
And nothing happens after dark
No way for getting to our mark
To sing the aria, absurd,
While we, smiling, word after word
Are waiting for a song to sing
With a few words that mean something
We’re waiting as the days go by
We’ve weeks and months and years to try
On worlds of neither here nor there
As we ride buses, trains somewhere
